Backlight Bleed Test: Check Screen Bleeding Online

Backlight bleed shows up as glowing corners or pale halos along the edges of dark scenes — the panel’s LED edge-lighting leaking through the LCD stack. This free test fills your screen with black and near-black fields so every leak, cloud patch and IPS glow zone stands out in a dark room.

How to run the bleed test correctly

Bleed is only visible in the dark, so test at night or with the lights off, and give your eyes a minute to adapt. Press F to enter fullscreen, then step through the black, 16-gray and 32-gray fields. Toggle the quadrant grid with G to assign each fault a zone (A/B/C/D) — that’s what a warranty claim needs. Watch the edges and corners specifically: a healthy panel keeps them as dark as the center.

Don’t confuse bleed with related faults. Uniform patches of pale gray across the whole panel are clouding (uneven backlight diffusion); a grayish-violet glow in the corners that shifts as you move your head is IPS glow — a property of the technology, not a defect; a single bright dot is a stuck pixel, not bleed. What counts as normal (and what justifies a return)

Almost every LCD — including expensive ones — shows some corner glow on a full-black field. Manufacturers know this and reject only severe cases. As a rule of thumb: bleed you can still see clearly during a normal dark movie scene is a problem; bleed visible only on a 100% black fullscreen test in a pitch-black room is within spec for most panels.

Document before you claim: photograph the black field with a fixed exposure (lock exposure on a mid-gray surface first), note which grid zones glow, and compare against the manufacturer’s own marketing photos of dark content. Returning a monitor within the no-questions window is usually easier than arguing warranty policy — pair this test with the dead pixel test and a grayscale check to build the complete case in one session.

Can bleed be reduced without returning the panel?

Sometimes. Lowering backlight brightness shrinks visible bleed proportionally — at 30% brightness most minor leaks disappear. Disabling local dimming off or, on some TVs, enabling it can change the picture dramatically either way, so test both. A gentle twist of the panel frame (flexing the bezel slightly) occasionally releases pressure spots caused by shipping, though this is a last resort on laptops and never a substitute for warranty service.

Note that none of these change the physics: if bleed is visible in normal viewing at your usual brightness, exchange the unit. Before deciding, also run the all-in-one screen test to make sure what you see is bleed rather than elevated black levels — a miscalibrated gamma setting can mimic mild uniformity faults on dark fields.
