What PPI means and how it is calculated

PPI (pixels per inch) is the density of pixels on a panel. The formula is simple: take the diagonal resolution in pixels — √(width² + height²) — and divide it by the diagonal in inches. A 27-inch 2560×1440 panel has a pixel diagonal of about 2937, so 2937 ÷ 27 ≈ 109 PPI. Enter any diagonal and resolution above and the calculator also returns the dot pitch (pixel pitch): the physical distance between pixel centers, which is just 25.4 mm divided by the PPI. At 109 PPI that is roughly 0.233 mm.

The same inputs give you the rest of the picture: physical width and height in millimeters, the aspect ratio (16:9, 21:9, 19.5:9 and so on) and total pixels. Total pixel count matters more than people expect — moving from 1920×1080 to 2560×1440 is a 78% jump, and to 3840×2160 is a 4× jump, all of which lands on your GPU. Reading the results: distance decides everything

PPI alone is half the answer — sharpness is pixel density relative to viewing distance. Your eye resolves about one arc minute, which works out to roughly 60 pixels per degree. At a desk, 50-60 cm from a monitor, that threshold sits near 90-110 PPI: a 27-inch 1440p panel (109 PPI) reads as "retina", while a 24-inch 1080p (92 PPI) shows barely-soft text if you look. A 15.6-inch laptop at 141 PPI is comfortably past it. A phone held at 25-30 cm needs 300+ PPI, which is why a 6.1-inch 457 PPI screen looks flawless while a TV at 2.5 meters is perfectly sharp at barely 50 PPI.

That is also the honest way to judge an upgrade. A 27-inch move from 1080p to 4K (92 → 163 PPI) is a real jump you will see in text clarity and fine detail; a 32-inch 1080p desk monitor at 69 PPI will look soft no matter the marketing.
