Glow vs Bleed

Glow follows your head: lean left and it moves left. Bleed stays put: a bright corner stays a bright corner from every angle. If it never moves, run the backlight bleed test.

Every panel changes as you move off-axis — the question is how much and how fast. This free viewing angle test fills the screen with white, black, gray and RGB patches plus a 16-step contrast wedge. The head-on baseline

Press F for fullscreen and sit centered, at your real working distance. On the large patches check three things: white stays white (no yellow or pink cast), black stays uniformly black, and 50% gray stays neutral. The contrast wedge at the bottom of your sweep should show all 16 steps — note how many remain distinguishable now, because this is the baseline every off-axis reading compares against.

Take a mental photo of the RGB patches too: saturated red, green and blue with clean hue. When you later move to the side, the first symptom on VA panels is usually red shifting toward orange or purple, and skin tones going gray-green. On IPS the hues hold but the corners of the black patch brighten — that is glow, not leakage; it belongs to the technology and moves with your head.

Reading the off-axis results

Now step 45 degrees to each side, then try a shallower 20-30 degrees — the angle a second viewer actually sits at. IPS panels: colors and contrast stay largely intact, but black brightens toward the near corners (glow) — expect it, it is not a defect unless extreme. VA panels: contrast collapses much sooner; black washes to gray and reds invert to orange-brown — normal at extreme angles, but if it is strong at 30 degrees, side viewers get a degraded picture.

The gray patch is the tattletale for uniformity faults unrelated to angle: if one side is pink and the other green even head-on, that is a panel defect — cross-check with the grayscale test. OLED panels barely change at all; any visible shift hints at a coating or polarizer problem rather than the emitters. For the corner-glow question on LCDs, the backlight bleed test separates glow (moves with you) from bleed (stays put).

Choosing and living with panel types

If you share the screen — sofa gaming, family photo editing, office dashboards — viewing angle matters more than spec sheets admit. IPS and OLED hold color for a wide arc; VA is superb head-on (contrast) but fades fast off-axis; TN fades fastest of all with dramatic color inversion. Run this test before buying in-store: display the white and black patches and walk a half-circle around the display.

At home, mitigate rather than fight: center your seating, angle the panel toward the primary viewer, and avoid the trap of correcting off-axis color errors — a display tuned for a side seat looks wrong head-on.
